Prírodu Štiavnických vrchov vyhlásili v roku 1979 s rozlohou 77 630 ha pod ochranu Chránenej krajinnej oblasti Štiavnické vrchy za CHKO. Chránená krajinná oblasť bola vyhlásená za účelom ochrany nielen prírodných hodnôt tohto územia, ale aj unikátnych pamiatok spojených s historickým osídlením a baníctvom. Svojou rozlohou je CHKO najväčším vulkanickým pohorím, rastú tu najvyššie položené duby cerové, hraby a jarabiny a najnižšie položené prirodzene rastúce jedle.
